Tommy is in his fifth year here at Kirkwood as the Director and head of staff. Having had many formative faith experiences at similar camps in Virginia, Tommy is passionate about summer camp and youth ministry.
People often wonder, “What does a camp director do in the winter?” Besides welcoming several guest groups weekly to the Kirkwood property, Tommy also works with the board on long-term planning, Kirkwood's chief marketer, occasionally is the camp/retreat guest cook, and generally anything else that needs to get done. Tommy, of course, loves summer camp, especially fair-weather canoeing and all games involving a disc.
Ford has been with Kirkwood off-and-on since 2017. He joined our staff full time in 2019 as our Program Director. Throughout the year, Ford is our main host, and works on preparing our summer camp program for the next season.
Ford is an Appalachian Trail through hiker ('16), and formerly worked at the Sarah Dooley Center for Autism in Richmond, Va. Able to glide through the woods like a friendly ghost, Ford loves the outdoors, coffee, building immense fires (safely!), and working with kids.
Kitchen Manager; Housekeeping
A longtime camper at Kirkwood, Rachel joined our seasonal staff for Summer 2017 and has been with us ever since. She took a lead role in the kitchen over summer 2019. She is extremely protective of the dishwasher machine. Rachel has also been a counselor, wasp removal, housekeeping, and a pretty much anything else we have asked of her.
Rachel is a very talented singer and well-versed in musical theater. She sees bears on our property more than anyone else. Coincidence?
